Californication quote and moving to Spain

Hello. It's been longer than I expected between posts. I still don't know why I even write anything ever, but I think it's more for me than for anybody else. Still, I'd like to know it has an audience. It's like if I go and make movies that only I'm gonna watch. Not too cool.

I am sitting here late Friday night/Saturday morning not really too sleepy. So I write to try to tire myself out on account of my own ridiculous thoughts flowing through the keyboard.

I'm listening to the Beatles right now. I downloaded a few of their better albums and just have them running one after the other. I had never really listened to them before other than a few clips here and there in movies or TV shows. I mean, I know they have to be good if they got so much attention, but I never tried them for myself. Now that I know their stuff a bit more, I can vouch that they're pretty awesome.

I just spent the last couple of hours watching Showtime's new show, Californication starring David Duchovny. I highly recommend it. It's along the same lines as Weeds, another great Showtime show. In short, it's about a writer that's struggling to get back to writing after his last novel has been turned into a movie and his ex-"wife" has left him taking their daughter. It's really very entertaining and funny. And it's on Showtime, so the situations are realistically adult and mature, unlike the crap that plays on network television. Even if you don't want to order Showtime, I recommend downloading them or something, but don't tell the FBI I told you to.

Actually, I heard a really meaningful quote on the show that got me thinking about the ideas I've had lately. It's ironic that I'm posting it in a blog, and you'll see why after I've typed it. Duchovny's character, Hank, has been demoted from successful novel writer to blogger, and on a radio show he comments:

"The Internet was supposed to set us free, democratize us, but all it's really given us is Howard Dean's aborted candidacy and 24-hour a day access to kiddie porn, ya know. People, they don't write anymore, they blog. Instead of talking, they text. No punctuation, no grammar. LOL this, and LMFAO that. You know, it just seems to me that it's just a bunch of stupid people pseudo-communicating with a bunch of other stupid people, in a proto-language that resembles more what cavemen used to speak than the King's English."

You can see the irony that I agree with this, but it's true. The majority of the people that actually read this blog come via Myspace. Unfortunately, the friendships I've made and maintained through there have tied me inexorably to the site, probably forever. But one of the things that irks me is the falsity with which people communicate on so-called "social sites". Specifically, those retarded quiz bulletins that everyone fills out. Now, I'm not exempt from participation. Just today, I filled one out for the first time in a long time. But immediately afterwards, I felt almost icky at the thought of expressing myself and revealing my identity through a series of one line quips meant more for a laugh than to actually inform people about my character.

Most blogging isn't much better, but I try. I've read several well-written blogs by people that could just as well put their writing talents into novelization or journalism. But they're content with keeping it personal and writing a first-person non-fictional narrative, and that's okay. But bulletins and mini-blogs (I'm looking at you Twitter) just don't cut it as far as worthwhile writing goes. Whatever...

An update on my film. I still haven't secured a location, but I have a few leads. If you have something that I could use, please feel free to let me know. Even if you just give the name of someone that could and does help, I'll give you an Associate Producer credit. I've gladly convinced a few friends to make up a part of my production crew. I give them the first of many thanks for their involvement. They'll be hearing my "thank you"s plenty over the next couple of months. I still need a few more, but I still have time. Once I have a completely final script, I'll be posting it online somewhere so folks can read it. I'll probably also start a production blog to keep myself updated on the progress.

My sister says she's considering moving to Spain along with her boyfriend. It's really his idea, but she's the one that would make it happen. If she does, I am moving with her. There's no second guessing of this, I'm gone. There's nothing in town, or even in the States that would keep me here if that opportunity came up. There's friend that would say that they'd "miss me". To be honest, with the exception of one or two, me being halfway around the world wouldn't decrease our current levels of communication much. They'd say, "hey, isn't Emilio in Spain right now?", and then they'd go about their lives. I guess that's a perk of being so distant from other people. I can more easily pack up and leave whenever I find the opportunity. But that won't happen for at least another year, so until then I'll grind it out as a cog in the American consumer machine.

Hey, I've gone on for a while without any religious comments. I'm proud of myself. I just thought of some to write, but I've gone on long enough so I'll leave it for next time, maybe even tomorrow. Alrato...

Sucks that you left your comment as annonymous, I am curious who would read such an old post? Thanks for the comment in either case.
